Layna Matthewson
Originally from Cass City, a small town located in Michigan's thumb region, Layna turned a lifelong passion for sports into a career by earning a Sport Management degree from Central Michigan University in 2022. From day one, she immersed herself in campus life—serving as SMA Treasurer, Vice President, and SMAC President—and gained extensive hands-on experience in CMU's Athletic Ticketing Office. Her three-year journey in the department began as a Ticket Sales Intern during her first year, quickly advancing to Ticket Operations Manager as a sophomore. In her final year, she stepped into a key leadership role as Acting Director of Ticket Sales and Operations, managing both athletic and non-athletic events during a transitional period. She credits mentors Dan Preuett and Chris Walker for trusting her with meaningful responsibility and helping her grow in confidence, leadership, and operational knowledge—especially during the unique challenges of the COVID-19 era. In addition to her campus involvement, Layna completed the Atlanta Hawks and Washington Commanders Sales Academies and took part in the Detroit Pistons Sales Challenge, gaining real-world sales experience that gave her an edge post-graduation.
After graduation, Layna joined the Indiana Pacers as a Consumer Sales Representative, and within a few months was promoted to Group Event Specialist for both the Pacers and the Indiana Fever. She now leads in team sales metrics, helps onboard new staff, and has had the privilege to be involved in major events, including NBA All-Star Weekend, WNBA All-Star, the NBA Finals, and welcoming back-to-back #1 WNBA Draft picks Caitlin Clark & Aliyah Boston to Indianapolis.
Relocating to a new city and adjusting to the demands of the industry wasn't easy for her at first. "When I first moved to Indianapolis, I struggled — I was away from everyone I knew and putting a lot of pressure on myself to perform," she shares. "What kept me going was remembering how hard I worked to get here and having a strong support system outside of sports." Her advice? "Never stop networking, and don't underestimate small opportunities—they often lead to the biggest growth. Give yourself grace, lean on others, and always appreciate the moments that make the long hours worth it."
Reflecting on her time at CMU, Layna is grateful for the hands-on experience and mentorship received from faculty like Steve Adler and Nick Williams, along with student organizations such as SMA, SMAC, and Women in Sports, for shaping her leadership skills and preparing her for success in the sports industry. "Every opportunity I've had comes from a connection I've made. Always appreciate the little moments, too, like seeing a kid's face light up when they meet their favorite player. Those moments make the grind worth it."
As Layna heads into her fourth NBA season, she continues to lead with passion, purpose, and a deep appreciation for the journey that started in Mt. Pleasant.
